Rider’s Rides – Gareth James, NC4000, June 2026
There are a few club members setting off on big adventures in 2026. We’ll be taking a look at their challenges and aspirations to maybe inspire you to set your own…
To celebrate turning 40 this year, Gareth wanted to do something special and memorable. After a bit of research he stumbled across the North Cape 4000 – ‘1 Continent, 8 Countries, 4000 km self-supported with a legendary destination, the Arctic Circle!’
“Starting in Rovereto, Italy on the 25th July and ending in Nordkapp, Norway (the northernmost point of mainland Europe) the NC4000 is a short 4,000km to ride and four mandatory gates to pass through: Munich, Berlin, Gränna and Rovaniemi.
“To be classed as a finisher I need to make it to Nordkapp by the 13th August. If all goes to plan I’ll be finishing early morning on the 10th August. The plan is to average around 250km a day, and joining Russ on the M2L Ambitious about Autism will be my last big weekend on riding before the big off on the 25th July.
“Lots to look forward to and plenty to be apprehensive about. My main worry is missing the mandatory ferry crossing Świnoujście (Poland) – Ystad (Sweden) which I have pre-booked for the night of day 5. Having never been to Scandinavia I’m most looking forward to exploring Sweden, Finland and Norway.
“Legs are getting there and bike/kit fettling nearly all done. If I get round to it I’ll be posting a video of each day on YouTube. Yet to get myself organised but watch this space. Link to follow if it all goes to plan!”
