There are three distances on offer \nWadborough Wanderer – 16 miles (26 km) of local country lanes that surround the Sportive HQ. This is the perfect ride for anyone thinking of trying a sportive for the first time. \nOverbury Outing – 32 miles (51 km) of riding which take you little further afield\, with some hills and fabulous views as a reward. Controls at Craven Arms\, Presteigne and Belboughton. \nDwell with the Marcher Lords in the border bad lands of England and Wales. Offa may be dead but this part of the country remains remote and sometimes wild. Good for the autumn too! \nI am sure you will be asking\, is this another Beacon RCC Kidderminster Killer type event. No it is not. Whilst hilly in parts\, there are plenty of good easy bits in between but suffice to say you will feel pleasantly tired and rewarded at the end of the day. Across the Dyke was conceived years ago by the late Alan Mason. The event was resurrected in 2018 and received good reviews for the route but not for the wet weather. We cannot guarantee dry weather for 2021 but hopefully the weather will be better! The event is run entirely by volunteers and profits go to fund the West Midlands Marie Curie Hospice in Solihull where Tommy spent his last few days. So far we have raised over £90\,000. \nTommy enjoyed cycling in the Warwickshire lanes and in later years was always keen to encourage other cyclists\, either established stars or total newcomers. With this event we aim to replicate Tommy’s experience of enjoying the countryside on our doorstep and his vision of encouraging young riders and other starting out on their cycling journeys. \nThere are three routes\, 30\, 73 and 100km. There is chip timing and refreshment stops for the 70km and 100km while the 30km ride is for families and the less experienced cyclists. The routes are all well signed and there are GPX files and route instructions that you can download. \nAs always there will be medals for all finishers\, mechanical support\, first aid and we will be offering post ride refreshments\, photos and sports therapy all free. The Kidderminster Killer is a classic audax that is challenging by reputation but very enjoyable to complete. Lots of Shropshire views across The Marches on route. \nThe 2021 route has been slightly changed to remind riders what hill climbing is like after the pandemic malaise. Outbound riders will head straight to Church Stretton before encountering The Long Mynd\, after which it as a loop through Montgomeryshire including The Cwm and Fiddler’s Elbow. Upon arriving at Ludlow you could head for a Michelin Star restaurant if that is your sort of thing. Then the final stretch takes around the side of Clee Hill and back to Belbroughton. This is a stunning route but with lots of up and down along the way. Take time and enjoy the views. The event will be predominantly on quiet country lanes\, the short route 48km or 30miles is on reasonably flat terrain with a couple of gentle hills\, whilst the medium distance 80km or 50miles is a little more challenging but not too difficult. The longest route 104km or 65miles encompasses a couple of additional climbs but nothing epic. Online entries will be via British Cycling cost £21.50 plus £1.00 admin with entries on the day £26.50\, subject to space the event will be capped at 250 entrants.
